Edo-Era Atmosphere Returns to Asakusa’s Kannon-ura Area:“Asakusa Edo Atmosphere Creation Project” (Feb 1 – Mar 14)

A tourism event themed around Edo-period culture, the “Asakusa Edo Atmosphere Creation Project,” will be held in the Kannon-ura area of Asakusa from Sunday, February 1 to Saturday, March 14, 2026. The project is part of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s initiative to create Edo-inspired streetscapes, showcasing Asakusa’s rich history and cultural heritage while offering visitors a new way to experience the area.

Throughout the event period, Edo-style noren curtains and lanterns will be displayed around Asakusa Shrine, along the streets of Kannon-ura, and at local shops, creating a calm and atmospheric streetscape. In addition to daytime strolls, the softly illuminated scenery from dusk into the evening will be one of the highlights.

On February 1, the opening day, an opening ceremony will be held at Tokiwa Hall within the grounds of Asakusa Shrine. The program will include a lantern lighting ceremony, traditional Japanese musical performances, dances by Asakusa geisha, and classic Edo-period performances such as kiyari chants, ladder acrobatics, and matoi twirling. Visitors will also have the opportunity to take part in an ukiyo-e woodblock printing experience, allowing them to engage directly with Edo culture.

During the project period, additional events will be held at Asakusa Shrine and surrounding areas, including lantern illuminations, noren art displays, ukiyo-e exhibitions, and hands-on programs where artworks can be viewed by the light of traditional Japanese candles. These events aim not only to attract tourists but also to help local residents rediscover Asakusa’s historical charm.

In the quieter Kannon-ura area, away from the bustle of Kaminarimon and Nakamise Street, visitors can enjoy strolling through Asakusa while soaking in the atmosphere of the Edo period.
