Sensō-ji Temple

Sensō-ji Temple is considered the oldest temple in Tokyo, with origins dating back to the era of Empress Suiko. It stands as a symbolic landmark of Asakusa. Its principal object of worship, the statue of the Sacred Kannon, is a hibutsu—a hidden Buddhist image that is never publicly displayed—and has long been revered as “Asakusa Kannon,” attracting deep devotion from countless worshippers over the centuries.

Within the temple grounds stand the stately Hōzōmon Gate and the majestic Main Hall. Visitors often waft the smoke rising from the large incense burner toward themselves, praying for good health of body and mind. Throughout the year, Sensō-ji hosts a variety of traditional events, from the New Year’s hatsumōde pilgrimage to the vibrant Hozuki Market in summer, along with many annual ceremonies that reflect the long history of Kannon worship.

Blending the charm of old downtown culture with enduring spiritual tradition, Sensō-ji continues to play an essential role not only as a site of historical significance but also as a pillar of local life and faith. It offers visitors a sense of quiet inspiration and comfort, making it one of Tokyo’s most cherished temples.
