“Marushime Asakusa” is a Lucky cat (maneki-neko) brand from Asakusa, with a gallery and workshop located on Nishi-Sando, adjacent to the west side of Sensoji Temple’s main hall.
Using historical documents and archaeological findings from the Edo period—records believed to be the oldest existing references to Lucky cats originating in Asakusa—the brand recreates the roots of the “Marushime Cat,” a style said to have become extremely popular when sold at stalls within the Sensoji temple grounds in the late Edo period. Unlike the typical forward-facing Lucky cat, the Marushime Cat features a distinctive side-sitting pose that reflects Edo-era “iki” (chic elegance), along with a sunken relief of the Marushime seal on its back. This seal carries the auspicious meaning of “gathering wealth and good fortune into a perfect circle.”
