Located in "Kannonura"—the historic district north of Senso-ji Temple infused with a timeless atmosphere—"Sake Sakana Zuburoku" sits quietly at the end of a traditional row of tenement buildings. Marked by a simple white norencurtain, this hidden gem opened in 2017 and was subsequently awarded "Bib Gourmand" status in the Michelin Guide Tokyo 2019. The name "Zuburoku" stems from an Edo-period term beautifully describing a blissful, deeply content state of intoxication.
The narrow and deep layout, unique to classic Japanese architecture, accommodates an intimate counter of just seven seats. Here, the owner-chef, Kenichi Taniguchi, single-handedly manages both the kitchen and customer service with quiet, attentive hospitality. This unpretentious and serene space stands as the absolute ideal haven for those looking to step away from the bustle of the city and enjoy a calm, high-quality evening.
The true allure of Zuburoku lies in the remarkable quality of its seasonal dishes. Every morning, the chef commutes via the market to personally select the finest wild-caught fresh fish. The "Sashimi Platter," thoughtfully available in an "S" size perfect for solo guests or sharing small portions, delivers an exquisite freshness. While self-taught, Taniguchi’s culinary intuition shines across a daily rotating menu of around 35 varieties of small plates, starting with a pristine three-dish otoshi (appetizer) infused with delicate dashi broth. Each plate blends traditional Japanese sensibilities with a subtle, contemporary artistic touch.
Behind the counter, a curated selection of sake bottles chosen by the owner peaks through. Featuring about 10 cold varieties and 15 options perfect for room temperature or warming (kanzake), the sake can be ordered in custom sizes of 90ml, 120ml, or 150ml. Since it can be enjoyed in small portions starting from around half a cup (90ml), guests can leisurely savor and compare different labels, immersing themselves in how the rich flavors bloom at various temperatures. In addition to sake, craft beer and Sapporo Lager Beer are available to refresh the palate. Surrounded by beautiful tableware and meticulously crafted bites, a seat at this seven-person counter promises a deeply authentic Asakusa evening.
