Tsuruoka

Tucked along a back alley in Nishi-Asakusa, just a short walk from Tsukuba Express Asakusa Station, Tsuruoka is an intimate, welcoming koryori-ya (traditional small-plate eatery) cherished by the local community across its roughly 90-year history. The cozy shop is warmly run by a senior proprietress alongside her daughter.

Stepping inside brings the immediate warmth of visiting a relative's house, met with cheerful smiles and genuine hospitality. The compact room features only counter seating, fostering an authentic old-town Tokyo ambiance where neighborhood regulars comfortably share conversations side by side. The colorful handwritten menu displays homestyle dishes made entirely by hand from scratch. Alongside the rare specialty unagi no meso—tender young eel that has become scarce across Tokyo—the kitchen serves seasonal seafood, daily simmered dishes, and classic drinking bites, all carrying a gentle, comforting touch that warms the heart.

First-time visitors can settle in effortlessly for a relaxed drink. Offering authentic taste and fair prices for comforting home cooking, it remains a haven showcasing the generous, unpretentious spirit of old-town Asakusa.
