Midori Sushi

Midori Sushi

Located along Kappabashi Hon-dori in Nishi-Asakusa, just a short walk from Tsukuba Express Asakusa Station, Midori Sushi is a venerable shop with a history spanning over 90 years. Today, the second-generation master and his third-generation son work side by side at the counter, keeping the doors open late into the night in a nostalgic Showa-era setting.

The star of the shop is its signature oversized, dynamic nigiri sushi. When nigiri sushi first emerged in the Edo period, each piece was two to three times larger than modern sushi, enjoyed by hand at street stalls as a hearty, fast-food meal. In an era without modern refrigeration, craftsmen used specialized techniques ("shigoto")—such as curing in vinegar, marinating in soy sauce, and simmering—to preserve the fish and enhance its flavor. Midori Sushi’s generous, full-bodied portions proudly carry on this traditional Edo heritage.

Along with fresh, hearty sashimi and appetizers that pair wonderfully with drinks, guests can casually enjoy a relaxed evening before finishing with their favorite large nigiri. Open late into the night, it is an inviting and dependable spot to experience authentic downtown Tokyo sushi culture.
