Ameya Rokurota

Tucked away in Kannoura north of Senso-ji Temple—an area once renowned as a historic geisha district—Bar Ameya Rokurota is one of Oku-Asakusa's most intriguing deep spots. Step past the quiet residential street and under the distinctive white noren curtain patterned with a red goldfish and an enigmatic name, and you are greeted by an intimate space filled with curated, soulful music.

The counter-only interior is lined with liquor bottles, books, and stacks of vinyl records. Run by a master who is himself an active musician, his repertoire spans classic rock, 1970s–80s Japanese folk-pop ("new music"), Showa-era kayokyoku, and niche subcultures. Every so often, he pulls out an astonishingly rare recording that leaves audiophiles speechless. Conversations drift effortlessly from deep musical discourse to candid tales of romance and affairs of the heart, keeping the drinks flowing late into the night. A few light bar snacks are on hand, alongside a curiously authentic Malaysian curry that has become a quiet signature.

Despite its underground hideaway aesthetic, the master is cheerful and remarkably welcoming, making first-time visitors feel immediately at home. As the night deepens over bursts of easy laughter, it offers a genuine dive into the rich, unfiltered nocturnal culture of backstreet Asakusa.
