Onigiri Asakusa Yadoroku

Onigiri Asakusa Yadoroku

Located behind the main hall of Senso-ji Temple along Kototoi-dori Street, "Onigiri Asakusa Yadoroku" was founded in 1954 and stands as the oldest existing onigiri specialty shop in Tokyo. Notably, it holds the distinction of being the first-ever onigiri establishment to be awarded a Bib Gourmand by the Michelin Guide Tokyo, regularly drawing a diverse international crowd alongside local regulars.

Inside, the atmosphere mirrors that of a traditional sushi restaurant. Guests sit at a cypress counter used since its founding, facing a glass showcase filled with ingredients. Each rice ball is individually shaped right before your eyes upon ordering.

The creation of Yadoroku's onigiri relies on precise and straightforward preparation. The core ingredient is Niigata Koshikari rice, selected through tasting during the harvest season and cooked in a traditional hagama iron kettle. Formed quickly using a custom wooden mold, the rice has an airy texture that softly yields when you take a bite. It is wrapped in crisp, aromatic Edomae nori from Chiba using the signature "Yadoroku-maki" style, which keeps one side of the seaweed upright to preserve its texture and fragrance.

The shop offers 17 varieties of fillings focused on long-standing classics, including savory salmon, pollock roe, and seasoned tiny shrimp sourced from Toyosu Market, alongside unique options like squid shiokara or fukujinzuke. Complemented by a flavorful, well-balanced red miso soup and crisp daikon pickles, the meal showcases perfectly executed simplicity.

As the shop closes the moment the freshly cooked rice runs out for the day, visiting early is highly recommended to experience this long-standing Asakusa institution.
