Tucked away in a quiet alley just steps from Kaminarimon Gate behind the Nakamise shopping street, Tonkyu is a family-run tonkatsu and yoshoku restaurant that has welcomed neighborhood regulars since around the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

The dining room offers a warm, welcoming space featuring counter seats, tables, and a cozy raised tatami area. Freshly fried upon order to a delicate golden-brown, the Roast Katsu Set (Loin Cutlet Teishoku) pairs a light, crispy breading with juicy, tender pork that highlights the natural sweetness of the meat. It is served thoughtfully alongside crisp shredded cabbage, potato salad, crunchy pickles, and a rich, dashi-infused tonjiru (pork and vegetable soup).

With a well-rounded menu including katsu-ju, hearty katsu curry, classic omurice, and mixed fried platters, it remains a comforting and dependable dining institution right by Kaminarimon.
