Tempura

徳仙

Located on Asakusa Rokku-dori Street, Tokusen is a long-standing tempura restaurant that has been a local favorite since its founding in 1890. Rather than the flashiness often found in tourist spots, its charm lies in its down-to-earth atmosphere that blends seamlessly into the daily life of the Shitamachi neighborhood. Historically, it was also a beloved haunt for many entertainers, including comedian Kinichi Hagimoto during his early training days.

Stepping through the noren curtains, you are greeted by a nostalgic space filled with the warmth of the Showa era and the savory aroma of sesame oil wafting from the kitchen. Their signature Tendon (tempura rice bowl) features a strikingly dark, rich, and sweet-savory sauce passed down through generations. This sauce soaks into the slightly thick batter, creating a perfect harmony of moist texture and natural flavors—a true taste of traditional Edo-style tempura.

In addition to the counter seats where the tempura pot takes center stage, the interior is uniquely connected to the adjacent sushi shop, allowing guests to order both tempura and sushi from either side. With many local regulars enjoying a casual daytime drink, the warm and unpretentious service of this family-run establishment continues to carry the authentic spirit of Asakusa across generations.
