Standing quietly along Kokusai-dori Avenue in a vintage wooden building, Tempura Takaraya is a neighborhood tempura institution founded in the 1920s. Situated steps away from the historic Asakusa Rokku entertainment district and the former Kokusai Theater, it has long welcomed theatrical performers, comedians, and rakugo storytellers.
Today, the third-generation master—born and raised in Asakusa—single-handedly runs the kitchen, preserving traditional downtown flavors. The frying oil blends sesame oil with cottonseed oil, imparting a rich, nutty aroma while keeping the batter surprisingly light and easy to enjoy.
The star offering is the signature Edomae Tendon, topped with a generous spread featuring sea eel (anago) spilling over the bowl, sand borer (kisu), big-eyed flathead (megocho), and Shiba shrimp uniquely arranged in a raft-like "ikada-age". Drizzled with a proprietary dark sauce continuously replenished since its founding, the balanced sweet-savory glaze perfectly complements the tender, fluffy seafood. Accompanied only by the rhythmic sizzle of the fryer and the warm aroma of sesame oil, it offers an authentic, unhurried taste of old Asakusa.
