Asakusa Raikaiken

Asakusa Raikaiken

Founded in Asakusa in 1910, Asakusa Raikaiken is a legendary restaurant recognized as the absolute origin of Japan's ramen boom and the pioneer of "machi-chuka" (Japanese-style Chinese diners). The founder, Kanichi Ozaki, adapted traditional Chinese noodles to suit Japanese palates by seasoning the broth with soy sauce, effectively creating the prototype for modern Japanese soy sauce ramen ("らうめん"). During its peak in the Meiji and Taisho eras, the shop achieved astronomical success, drawing up to 3,000 customers a day during busy holiday seasons. This immense popularity eventually sparked the nationwide spread of ramen, transforming it into Japan's ultimate national comfort food. Although the original shop closed its doors in 1976, it was magnificently revived in its birthplace of Asakusa in July 2026, brought back to life through rigorous historical research and reconstruction.

The signature dish, "Hyakunen Shoyu Raumen" (100-Year Soy Sauce Ramen), features a deep, savory broth built on a base of dark soy sauce from "Yamasa Shoyu"—the exact brewery that had been used at its founding—crafted entirely with domestic whole soybeans. The clear chintan soup, slowly simmered with domestic pork bones, vegetables, dried sardines, and premium Nagoya-breed chicken, harmonizes beautifully with custom-made, fine crinkled noodles that carry a rich wheat aroma. Complemented by vintage-style red-rimmed chashu pork and delicate, hand-wrapped wontons, every bowl resurrects the flavors of the Meiji era with modern, high-quality ingredients.

The establishment is equally renowned as the birthplace of the historic "Tenshindon" (Crab Meat Omelet Rice Bowl). Created originally to answer a customer's request for a quick meal, the Tenshindon features a fluffy omelet packed with real shredded crab meat—rather than imitation crab—drenched in a generous layer of their secret savory sauce. Together with their signature large-sized "Shiumai" (steamed pork dumplings) and "Wonton Soup", this restaurant offers a nostalgic yet deeply refined space where visitors can truly taste the roots of Japanese food culture.
