Kamameshi Mutsumi

Kamameshi Mutsumi

About a 15-minute walk from Asakusa Station on the Tobu Skytree Line and Tokyo Metro Ginza Line. Located in the "Kannon-ura" area, which once flourished as a vibrant geisha district, this establishment has proudly maintained its traditions since its founding in 1932, relocating to its current address in 1968. Operating inside a charming house that was originally a geisha's "Okiya" (lodging house), it serves exquisite kamameshi (kettle rice) and seasonal dishes.

The signature kamameshi is prepared to order, combining raw rice and fresh ingredients to be meticulously cooked one individual iron pot at a time. The culinary foundation relies on a premium dashi broth freshly brewed every morning using Rishiri kelp and select bonito flakes sourced from the market, allowing the rich, savory flavors of options like assorted (Gomoku), fresh salmon, chicken, or crab to thoroughly infuse into every single grain of freshly cooked rice.

After enjoying the fluffy rice, the best part awaits at the bottom: the fragrantly toasted, crispy rice known as "okoge". When a guest found themselves struggling to scrape this delicious layer from the pot, the staff gently stepped in to expertly help loosen it. Such warm and thoughtful hospitality, characteristic of a downtown Tokyo establishment, deeply touches the heart. It remains a beloved spot where guests can leisurely enjoy a wide variety of Japanese dishes like sashimi and grilled sake-appetizers before concluding their evening with the ultimate comforting bowl of rice.
