Kappa Yakisoba Kihachi

Located a 5-minute walk from Tsukuba Express Asakusa Station, this second-floor yakisoba specialty shop sits in a quiet alley of Nishi-Asakusa. Its name honors local folklore: the merchant Kihachi, who funded regional flood-control works, and the mythical river spirits (kappa) said to have helped him.

A major highlight of the shop is its charismatic owner, Mr. Kigoro, who worked for 40 years as a tour conductor. His warm hospitality and engaging conversation make the eatery a favorite spot for local comedy performers from the Asakusa Toyokan, neighborhood regulars, and international visitors. The shop has also gained wide attention through appearances on TV programs such as Kodoku no Gourmet.

The signature yakisoba offers a customizable ordering system, pairing three sauce flavors (a signature 13-sauce blend, salt, or spicy curry) with thin or medium-thick noodles crafted by the renowned local maker Asakusa Kaikarou. Served on traditional Mashiko pottery, dishes can be topped with fried eggs or fresh salads, alongside menu items like soup-style yakisoba, pub appetizers, and drinks.
