Located on Kototoi-dori Street, just north of Senso-ji Temple, "Chibaya" is a specialty shop dedicated to Daigaku-imo—a traditional Japanese snack of deep-fried sweet potatoes coated in a sweet syrup glaze. Founded in 1950, the shop draws on the expert knowledge of its founder to select the finest domestic potatoes each season, a tradition upheld by the third-generation owner today.
The menu offers two styles with distinct textures. The classic "Daigaku-imo" features large, chunky wedges that are crispy on the outside and surprisingly fluffy on the inside, generously coated in a secret golden syrup that enhances the potato's natural sweetness. In contrast, the "Kiriage" consists of thinly sliced fried potatoes with a light, snappy crunch, perfectly glazed for a rich and savory-sweet flavor.
Perfect for a family treat or as a classic Asakusa souvenir, these time-honored golden sweets are a true taste of old-town Tokyo to enjoy at home.
